Carbocation Generation by Organophotoredox Catalysis

Carbocations have gained much attention as fundamental and reactive chemical species, enabling the construction of sterically hindered complex molecules. Conventionally, generation a carbocation requires use strong acid, which limits their applications to synthesis highly functionalized Herein, we present visible light-mediated, organophotoredox, radical-polar crossover catalytic method for non-acidic carbocations. Under blue light irradiation, phenothiazine based- organophotoredox catalyst converts an alkyl electrophile corresponding alkylsulfonium species via sequential single electron transfer events. The generated acts equivalent, reacts with broad range nucleophiles. By taking advantage characteristics radical-mediated reactions, radical relay type, vicinal difunctionalization alkenes has also been accomplished.
